BUILDING AND HISTORY
The Tansy Centre was the result of 8 years of hard work to raise the funds to replace the porta-cabin that used to occupy this site. It was designed to try to cater for many different groups and over the years it has become well used.
The centre is run totally by volunteers and is a not for profit organisation, any charges to users are solely to cover the running costs of the centre. Unfortunately, during these hard times any funding from local authorities, the council, or private funding groups has all but stopped meaning that we depend on these user groups to keep the doors open.
Occasional small amounts of funding have been granted in order to upgrade the centre’s environmental impact
Why the Tansy Flower ?
During the community centre construction some of the local children where asked if they could come up with a suitable name for the new community building.
It was decided that the centre should be aptly titled “Tansy” named after the small yellow flower-herb, often used for healing purposes.
The Tansy grows local to South Hylton, quite close to the banks of the passing River Wear.
